Alternative report on Ukraine’s compliance with the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

Two reports on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child were presented at the Parliamentary Online Conference on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the International Children’s Day. These reports were prepared by the Coalition for the Rights of the Child in Ukraine and the Ukrainian Child Rights Network together with other NGOs and children.

The first report includes the positions of more than 30 NGOs working in the field of children’s rights, the second report – prepared by children and summarizes the monitoring and discussions of children on children’s rights, conducted during 2018-2019 and is entirely based on children’s opinions.

This is the first time in Ukraine that children have joined the preparation of the Alternative Report and submitted their own report on the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Ukraine.

The children presented their recommendations and proposals to the Government on such issues as: discrimination (age, ethnicity, race), security in cyberspace, respect for children’s opinions, violence against children (psychological, physical, sexual), privacy of children and the right to free space, employment youth, bullying at school, the right to education, etc.

Such a communication platform, where children and MPs of Ukraine, experts who are children’s human rights activists, take an active and, most importantly, equal part in the discussion, will promote one of the key principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, namely respect for the child’s opinion.
